Photos of plants and lichens

All project participants can upload an unlimited number of plant and lichen photos to the site.

Restrictions

  • Images must be prepared in JPEG format.
  • Maximal width of images is 1400 px (точек), maximal height is 1400 px, maximal "weight" is 600 Kb.
  • The length of the smallest side of the image must not be less than 450 px.
  • The uploaded photos must be taken personally by you and belong to you. Uploading other people's photos to the site on your own behalf is strictly prohibited!
  • The photo must not have serious technical defects; the plot and the execution of the picture must fit into the existing thematic, plot and technical constraints.

If you want to upload photos taken by another person to the site, you can do this solely on his behalf and with his consent. To do this, you need to register an account in the name of the author of the photo, then log in to the site under this name and then upload the images.

Uploading

Before uploading photos, please log in.

Ideally, the photo should be immediately uploaded to the taxon-specific image set. To do this, it is best to find a plant or lichen by name, and then use the "Set of images" link to go to the taxon photo management page.

However, there are times when the photographed plant is unknown to you, or you only know its Russian name, but it was not possible to find it in the site database. In this case, the photo can be uploaded to the section "Unidentified specimens".

How to upload a photo of an unknown plant or lichen?

  1. Go to the link "Unidentified specimens", located in the right pane.
  2. Select the "Upload image" menu item on the left panel.
  3. In the dialog that opens, specify the file to upload, complete the description (adhering to the recommended style) and indicate the appropriate rubrics.
  4. Click the button "Upload".
  5. If you know the Russian name of a species, or you want to provide additional information that may be useful for determining (the size of individual organs, a detailed description of the shooting location, etc.), start a discussion of the uploaded photo on the forum: this will help other project participants to identify the plant and transfer the image to the required taxon. To do this, follow the "Discussion: start" link located to the right of the preview of the uploaded image.

How to upload a photo of a known plant or lichen?

For adding photos and editiong their properties, there is a special page "Set of images" for each taxon. The simplest way to get to it and upload an image is as follows:

  1. Find a taxon using "Search for taxa".
  2. Click on the desired name in the search results and follow the link "Set of images" located in the pop-up menu that appears.
  3. On the left panel of opened "Set of images" page select the "Upload image" menu item.
  4. In the dialog that opens, specify the file to upload, complete the description (adhering to the recommended style) and indicate the appropriate rubrics.
  5. Click the button "Upload".

Links to the "Set of images" pages are available in many places. For example:

  • in menu "Edit" on the left panes of pages "Taxon details", "List of subtaxa", "Russian names", "Set of images" etc.;
  • in menu "Edit" on the right panel of the viewing page of any image assigned to this taxon;
  • in the menu that appears when you click on the taxon name in the list of results on the page "Search for taxa";
  • in the context menus that appear when you right-click on the taxon name in the "Systematics" section on various pages;
  • in the context menus that appear when you right-click on the taxon name in the list on the page "List of subtaxa".

These links are visible, and the "Set of images" page is available only to project participants viewing the site in an authorized mode.

What if the taxon is absent in the site database?

If the desired species is not in the database, the image must be uploaded to the first parent taxon (genus, family, order, etc.) available on the website (see instructions above). In this case you need to add the Latin name of the taxon and its author to the information about the photo. To do this, in the image upload form, check the "Taxon is absent in database" option and fill in the fields that open. It is advisable to check the spelling of the Latin name and its author using the IPNI database. Russian-language names for this taxon can be added to the site after it is entered into the database (to find out about this, you can subscribe to the corresponding email notification on the "Account settings" page).
